The Day My World Shattered

In December 1992, the trajectory of my life changed forever in a single, devastating moment. I was only four years old—an age when your entire universe is supposed to feel safe, predictable, and securely anchored by the love of your parents. Instead, that month became the marker of an unimaginable tragedy.

I was ripped out of the loving arms of my biological mother and thrusted into the CPS system.

Even at four, the sensory details of that day remain seared into my memory. The sudden chaos, the overwhelming terror, and the absolute confusion of being torn away from the only comfort I had ever known. To a child, it didn't feel like a bureaucratic intervention or a safety measure; it felt like an abduction of the soul. The maternal warmth that had defined my first four years of existence was instantly replaced by the cold, sterile reality of foster care, case numbers, and unfamiliar faces.

The word traumatic is often used to describe difficult life events, but it feels entirely inadequate for what happens when a toddler's foundational bond is violently severed. It was a foundational fracture that rippled through my entire childhood and followed me into adulthood.
